Design and a Time Machine

There are a lot of things that I pay attention to when I see top notch advertisements. Design is something I like and something that I try to do well so I pay special attention to details. Here are some of the things that go throuh my mind with this advertisement. What is trying to be communicated? Why are they telling me? What is the catch? What are the drinks for? How does one “eat” lard? It was my understanding that it had to go in something… Is there such a thing as lard casarole? I digress.
It all comes down to this on this particular advertisement. It simply has to be an advertisement that is very time sensitive. Yesterday it worked. Today? Not so much.
Pay to play

Recently I have been doing a lot of photography for U Weekly.

Ohio State and Miami opened Central Collegiate Hockey Association play with the first shootout in league history. The Buckeyes prevailed, 4-3 (SO), winning the shootout, 3-1.
Here is how it all started. I have a friend who knew that I wanted to do more paid work (and who doesn’t). He saw a posting on CraigsList.com and sent it to me via chat. I looked at it and saw that they were looking for people to go out and shoot folks having fun (geting drunk) at local bars. It seemed like something I could and was, odly enough, what I had done for some clubs here in town several years ago. So I sent off an email.
A few days past and I figured that it was going to be like most other CraigsList.com ads and I would not hear anything. To my surprise I got an email. The job was to go to some area bars and get shots of people having fun. So after asking a few questions I decided to give it is shot. The first night went well and it all continued to go well for a few months. Yes I had some trouble at times but over all I was having a good time.
The whole time I kept telling my bosses that I would really like to do more stuff. “I want concerts, sports or whatever you have”, I would say over and over. At some point someone heard me and I got a couple “special” projects. One of which was where the photo and post “Ice Is Nice” came from. Another fun assignment I got was an autograph signings at BW3. I got to hang out with Chris “Lights Out” Lytle who is one of the UFC fighters. He was a nice guy and the phots were good enough to make the bosses happy.
Later after asking again for more assignments I was invited to shoot some OSU Sports. I jumped on the opportunity and spent a day shooting OSU Women’s Softball and OSU Womens Lacross. These shots were not for anything in particular. Best I could tell is that it was a test to see if I could do it. I think I passed as I have been asked to go shoot some more sports that have made it to print.
I have also sone some shooting for the cover of the paper. I like doing this. It gets the mind working and places me in a situation where I have to deal with new challanges. I have had a couple of shots grace the cover and I hope to continue. Here is one of the ones that made it:

This image was used on the cover of U Weekly. It was in support of an artlcle about the potential 18 year old drinking age.
With all of that said I have worked hard at every task at hand and I have learned something in every new situation I was in. I am grateful that I have been given any and all opportunities. I hope to continue to grow as a photographer and to have the work I am requested to to grow along with it.
Ice Is Nice

This last Saturday was McFadden’s two year anniversary. As an OSU campus bar I expected what one might expect. Drinking drunk people gyrating and drinking more. I have been to this bar many times on assignment for U-Weekly; an OSU weekly newspaper and I knew that this night would be a special addition to the gyrating drunk-fest…
Rob Van Winkle was supposed to show up and have some fun. I was told that he was there last year but I could gather no more information than that. I had no idea what to expect and all that I kept having pop up in my mind was those times I saw him on VH1; Angry and throwing fists at photographers. This was a little concerning to me as I was to be one of those people pointing a camera at him. Click! Click! Punch!!
I missed his entrance and I have yet to figure out how. I was there at the front door. I suppose that he was just sneaky. Finally a cool bouncer came up to me and said I was just told that he is up stairs in the back corner. I quickly said thank you and ran up to see.
He was there and there was no way to get near him. It was freaking packed. After trying to do some shots holding the camera above my head and hoping for the best I decided to get a little more aggressive. By “aggressive” I mean that I walked over to the bar manager and politely asked if I could come behind the bar and get some shots. They were nice and let me. This is where I acquired the best shots of the eve.
You can see some of the shot on my Flickr page.
